Broadwood Loch West Cycle Routes (Map)
There are 2 cycle routes described here with some variations thrown in for good measure. The routes are:
- Broadwood Loch – Kirkintilloch – Moodiesburn – Broadwood Loch
- Broadwood Loch – Kirkintilloch – Kilsyth – Croy – Broadwood Loch
The starting place is Broadwood Loch located on the west of Cumbernauld and the home of Clyde Football Club. There are 2 car parking areas
- a small parking area to the west of the loch and located off Orchardton Road.
- A large parking area to the east of the loch on Atholl Drive and used for the football supporters at the Broadwood Stadium
From either parking area make your way to Orchardton Road where you head west towards Kirkintilloch.
Athe end of Orchardton Road turn left onto Mollins Road – this is a main thoroughfare and should be treated with caution.
Take the first right towards Barbeth
Travel west passed Barbeth Caravan Park
At the fork in the road after the Sauchenhall Riding School take a right leading to Drumbreck
Follow the road passed Bedlam Paintball, under the railway line and passed Wester Gartshore farm
Beyond Gartconner Primary School as the road turns to the right there is a pedestrian walkway running downhill to the left. Join this walkway which will take you into Moss Road
At the end of Moss Road turn right then immediately left to take you into Backodykes Road
At the end of Backodykes Road cross to the pedestrian bridge. Cross the bridge and go to the right.
Pass the Duntiblae Store then Waterside Miners club.
At the end of this road you can decide on which route to take.

Broadwood Loch – Kirkintilloch – Moodiesburn – Broadwood Loch
Cross the junction and continue west. The road carries on for several hundred yards and then goes to the left.
Continue along this road. You will pass under the railway line and experience a tough but short uphill climb.
Eventually you will pass Braeside Farm with a turnoff to Moodiesburn to the right. )This is another potential route back to Broadwood but it involves travelling on a more traffic laden route.)
Continue passed the farm and eventually there is a sharp turn to the left. Down to the bottom of the road and at the junction go to the right
Continue to the next junction and again go right. You will then pass the stables and Barbeth Farm.
At the end of the road turn left then right to take you back into Orchardton Road.
The entry to Broadwood Loch is on the left

Broadwood Loch – Kirkintilloch – Kilsyth – Croy – Broadwood Loch
Turn to the right and continue until you reach Waterside Road
Turn left and continue until the roundabout where you take the second exit
Continue up the hill along Redbrae Road. Straight through the next roundabout and then to the left on the second roundabout.
This is where you join the Forth and Clyde Canal by joining the bridlepath on the right as soon as you cross the bridge
Continue along the path beside the canal. At Twechar you leave the canal path, cross the Main Street and rejoin the canal path. (You can return to Broadwood at this point by turning right into Main Street. Continue on this road until the min roundabout where you take a left. There is then another roundabout at which you take the second exit. Continue along this road and the 3 rd turning to the left should be Orchardton Road. The entry to Broadwood Loch is on the left)
Continue along the path until Kilsyth then exit onto the B802 at Auchinstarry. ( A pleasant time can be spent at the water pool in Aunchinstarry, watching the rock climbers or walking around the grasslands.)
Turn right onto the B802 heading for Cumbernauld. It is advised to cycle on the pavement rather than the narrow road especially as this stage involved an incline.
Keep on the footpath and you will reach the outskirts of Croy.
Cross Constarry Road and continue along the road towards Cumbernauld. The footpath can sometimes be overgrown with trees or large shrubs so be prepared to brake sharply.
Unfortunately the footpath runs out before you reach Cumbernauld and you must continue on the B road until you reach a large roundabout
Take the third exit and continue along Blackwood Road and take the second road to the left.
Continue down this road and go right to be greeted with the site of Broadwood Loch
At the Loch go right for the small car park or left for the large car park
